Narrow-band imaging for detecting early recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

چکیده
BACKGROUND Detection of early recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is clinically challenging. Narrow-band imaging (NBI) is powerful in detecting early superficial lesions in the head and neck, although the utility of NBI in detecting nasopharyngeal cancer is still unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS We describe a case of a 51-year-old man with early recurrent NPC detected in subclinical stage by NBI coupled with conventional endoscopy. MRI revealed no obvious bulging or inward invasion over the nasopharynx. Because of superficial, localized recurrence, we performed laser nasopharyngectomy and his postoperation course was uneventful. CONCLUSIONS We demonstrated that postirradiated NPC in a patient with early recurrence was successfully detected by NBI coupled with conventional endoscopy. NBI endoscopy is a simple, convenient, and reliable tool, and adds additional value to detect local recurrence in the early phase. It may serve as an ideal tool in posttreatment surveillance in a patient with NPC.

Narrow band imaging of nasopharynx to identify specific features for possible detection of early nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
BACKGROUND Narrow band imaging (NBI) features of normal and early nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) have not been clearly described. The main purpose of this study was to define NBI features in the nasopharynx in the detection of early NPC. METHODS We conducted a prospective cohort study of 53 patients who underwent NBI endoscopy to describe its specific features. RESULTS Among 19 normal patie...

AIM To compare narrow-band images of nasopharyngeal carcinoma with those of normal adenoidal tissue. METHOD Patients with a nasopharyngeal mass were evaluated using both conventional white light and narrow-band light. Biopsies were performed and Epstein-Barr viral serology was tested for all patients. RESULTS Thirty consecutive patients were recruited. Twenty-one patients had normal adenoid...
متن کاملThe importance of the optimal volume in the treatment of locally recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma; brachytherapy or stereotactic radiotherapy?
Introduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is commonly known as a radiosensitive tumor with the initial good response to radiation. Despite the improved outcome in loco regional control by the introduction of combining treatment, modern radiotherapy techniques and enhanced imaging studies, local recurrent after primary treatment with rate ranges from 15-58% in 5 years, stil...
متن کاملDiagnosis of nonexophytic nasopharyngeal lesion with endoscopy-guided core needle biopsy after narrow band imaging
Background Due to the obstruction of the surrounding structures or stiff mucosa, the primary and recurrent nonexophytic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NE-NPC) patients are difficult to be diagnosed histologically by traditional forceps biopsy. Results All the 15 cases had adequate biopsy for histological diagnosis. There were 5 cases of primary and 7 cases of recurrent NE-NPC, and 3 cases of infla...
متن کاملReversal of pale-to-dark nasopharyngeal follicle ratio on narrow-band imaging.
Normal nasopharyngeal mucosa contains varying amounts of lymphoid tissue, which in adults may be minimal or absent. Nasopharyngeal mucosa with minimal lymphoid tissue has a regular follicular pattern on narrow-band imaging; pale follicles have thin, dark borders and the ratio of the pale follicle to the dark border (pale-to-dark ratio) is roughly 90%. In some patients undergoing routine nasopha...
